Clearing Ethiopian Coffee Beans the Right Way

Our latest client imported Ethiopian roasted coffee beans, and although it was their first time importing, we were able to work with them well in advance of their air shipment. This is one of the most effective strategies for ensuring a smooth Customs clearance process. By preparing ahead of time, we were able to walk them through the import process so they fully understood the requirements specific to air transportation.
We completed the Power of Attorney (POA) in advance and ensured the importer was properly set up in the U.S. Customs system before the shipment arrived, helping to avoid unnecessary delays.
We also emphasized the importance of reviewing documentation prior to shipping. By working together ahead of time, we were able to identify and resolve any potential discrepancies before the cargo reached the airline. One of the most critical areas for importers to understand is incoterms—the buyer and seller’s agreement—which can have a significant financial impact if not reviewed carefully. Upon reviewing the commercial invoice, we noted that the shipment was sold under CFR (Cost and Freight) terms. This prompted us to ensure that freight charges were properly itemized on the invoice for Customs deduction purposes. Revised documentation was received before the shipment’s arrival, preventing delays and unnecessary costs.
What made this experience especially rewarding was the client’s eagerness to understand the regulations. Through teamwork and proactive communication, we ensured that the FDA Prior Notice was filed in advance of arrival, helping to expedite Customs clearance and avoid storage fees.
